California's End of Life Option Act -   

Presentation and Discussion with Dr. Fred Kass:

As we age, one of our most difficult tasks is making end of life decisions.  A subject fraught with pitfalls, many of us postpone it, leaving it to our heirs to muddle through!  Isn't it a wonderful gift for them to leave documentation of our own wishes so that they can follow them?

On  Sunday, April 28, at 3:00 at Mackenzie Lawn Bowl Club, Curious Minds will host Dr. Fred Kass, well-known oncologist and one of the doctors in town willing to discuss Medical Aid in Dying.  The title of his talk is "California's End of Life Option Act - What should the death certificate list as the cause of death?"  He lectures on this topic for a course at UCSB.  He will provide us with a pdf version of his PowerPoint presentation ahead of his talk to better prepare us  with questions. We will also provide documents or links that might be of interest to you as you make these difficult but such important plans.  

Dr. Kass thinks that this  topic is best covered with audience participation.  He will probably talk for 15-25 minutes with the Q&A  easily taking up the remainder of the available time.  

Dr. Kass graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1984,  did his residency at Yale, and received a Fellowship to attend Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  Interestingly, he studied and practiced law before going into medicine.  This gives him a particular interest in topics like the EOLOA. (End of Life Options Act). 

He has been practicing cancer medicine since 1986 and is currently enjoying his brand new office at the UCLA facility on Victoria St.
