Curious Minds Presents:
RARE EARTH MINERALS
Do we run the risk of depleting our rare earth minerals?
Our speaker, Dr. Justin Wilson of UCSB Chemistry, will talk about the politics and environmental concerns in the race for control of the rare earths and transition metals that are absolutely required for all our high tech electronics.
Rare earth minerals are a group of 17 specialized elements—including neodymium, lanthanum, and cerium—crucial for high-tech magnets, electronics, and defense systems. They are often found in rocks like eudialyte or charoite and typically appear as metallic, silvery-white, or brightly colored crystalline rock samples, often requiring intense refinement.
Beverages and light refreshments will be served.
Parking is somewhat limited so please carpool if possible.
