We are fortunate to have Dr. Joel Rothman, Distinguished Professor, Wilcox Family Chair in Biotechnology, and founding Director of the Center for Aging and Longevity Studies at UC Santa Barbara.

Biography:

Dr. Rothman received doctoral training at UC San Francisco and the University of Oregon and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Medical Research Council, Cambridge, UK. He has served as Chair of the Department of MCD Biology and Director of the Biomolecular Science and Engineering Program at UCSB and also as a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Prior to graduate studies, he was head winemaker at Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma, California and a classical music radio program announcer. For over three decades his laboratory has investigated aging, longevity, and regenerative medicine, supported by research grants from the National Institute on Aging and many other agencies. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dutch Garden Restaurant

While awaiting the openings of several new SB restaurants, let's go back to the oldest restaurant in Santa Barbara, from the 1940's, the Dutch Garden, perfect for an autumn outing!    It was closed for a while and is now under new management but not much has changed!  Tucked away at the foot of San Marcos pass on upper State St, the locals obviously welcomed back the cherished restaurant, with intimate patio and uber charming restored interior. Service is attentive and very friendly. The food?  German classics with locally sourced proteins and vegetables such as pork schnitzel, sauerkraut, pretzels and house made sausages.   They even have a vegetarian celery root shnitzel.  The beer selection is excellent too.  I have booked 2 tables for 6 inside, but if the weather is warm, we can move out to the charming patio.  Parking is a bit tricky, so as always, I recommend carpooling, but in addition to the 10 or so spaces in front of the restaurant, there is a lot around the back.  (pay attention to competing signs posted by both the restaurant and their neighbors!).   Good news, they will take separate checks!

November starts with "Day of the Dead", then "All Souls Day". This is the time of year when we visit our "Dearly Departed".  We are fortunate to have a beautiful setting in which to so it. Let's start with some of the people we missed in earlier visits:  e.g. John Peck Stearns (Stearn's Wharf), Herb Peterson (inventor of Egg Mc Muffin) and go on to some of our favorites (e.g. Fess Parker, Tab Hunter).

We will meet outside the chapel, and start with a quick look at the beautiful chapel murals. Those who want a more leisure walk will then drive to the top of the hill - while the more ambitious will walk up to meet them. 

The "Wine" part will take place at Reunion Restaurant following the walk.

Santa Barbara Jewish Festival

The Stamp Thief,

With Special Guests Dan Sturman & Gary Gilbert

Join us on November 4th for a 4:30 movie called The Stamp Thief.  Part detective story, part heist film, part untold history.  The movie investigates a tale dating back to the Holocaust.  A mysterious Nazi stole priceless stamp collections from concentration camp victims and buried them in a small town in Poland.  The movie's goal: to return the stamps to their rightful owners.  Producer Gary Gilbert and Director Dan Sturman will introduce the film and hold a Q&A after.

The recent Arts Collaborative Catalog lists no more than 20 fascinating murals, of all shapes, sizes and genres, in our City's unique Funk Zone.  We'll take in as many as we can before settling in for Happy Hour in one of the Funk Zone's watering holes.

It promises to be a delightful celebration of all we have to be thankful for in this fun place.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall: An Insider’s Perspective

In November 1989 the Berlin Wall cracked open, and

crowds of ecstatic East Germans flowed freely into

West Berlin for the first time since 1961. Soon the

entire “Iron Curtain” across Europe had crumbled.

Within one year East Germany was gone, and within

two years the Soviet Union itself had collapsed. How

and why did the Cold War end this way?

Join retired American diplomat Gary Robbins for a

discussion. Gary served in West Germany 1987-89,

with special focus on Berlin affairs and broader

German security issues.

Gary’s 30-year career as a State Department Foreign

Service Officer -- a career diplomat -- included

postings in nine countries on four continents, with

special focus on security issues, human rights, and

the rule of law. Before joining the State Department,

Gary was an attorney with the Seattle firm of Graham

and Dunn. The views he expresses will be his own,

and not necessarily those of the US Government.

Enjoy strolling through the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden with fellow SB Social Club Members.  What could be better than eating outside among nature's bountiful treasures.  Bring your own lunch as we find a lovely area to sit, eat and socialize with each other.  

Let's take advantage of this once a month free-entry Wednesday for those over 60. 

Meet promptly at the Botanic Garden entrance at 11:00 am.  Wear your name tag so we recognize you. Carpooling is highly recommended.

 Afterwards you are welcome to continue to explore the Garden as long as you would like.
